These are little grains of genius that strike at unexpected moments. Keep in mind that what I consider "genius" may not be quite up to snuff with what *you* consider genius!
MY PROGRAM NEEDS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS!
Friday, June 03, 2005
Fighting global poverty requires teenagers--lots and lots of them.
So my internship is all about getting high school students to learn how to be leaders in the fight against global poverty. You can find out more about it specifically at
www.NetAid.org. It’s a totally awesome program with a lot of good stuff happening, BUT we don’t have enough kids. This is something i really believe in. WOW, work that I believe in! How novel!
Anyway, this is where i need your help. Do you guys know any high shcoolers who are interested in global issues like education, HIV/AIDS, poverty, nutrition, etc.? If you do, SEND THEM MY WAY!
The program is all about connecting with others who have similar interests and linking them together in a support network so they can plan events at school that will actually have some kind of lasting impact (no depressing pictures of babies with flies and distended bellies). Some of the kids will come to New York for free for training at a week long summit. Yay! I get to attend! More jack-of-all-trades work! Woot!
Anyway, go check out the program. Send me some teens!
Everything Up Front

As per your comments, I’m moving all the posts to appear on the first page.
You can find them archived in their categories, but pretty much that’s the only function those categories serve right now. Upon redesign, this will be more smooth and make more sense...i hope. For now, you will have no idea what category the post belongs to because I have set up Expression Engine incorrectly so my category tags are USELESS! Therefore, please wait until the redesign to try to make sense of this site.
Thank you.

This is perhaps one of the most brilliant ideas: $1 a plate taste-testing in Chinatown!
Thanks to Laura (who had to clue me in from all the way in Nebraska!), I was clued in to this wonderful event that took place on Mott just below Canal St. They blocked off the roads and made it a pedestrian’s paradise! Chinese restaurants had their food out and on display, selling for only $1/plate! Some were, well, stingy and only had a tiny portion for that dollar. BUT some were very generous with their portions. Singapore Cafe had some great Malaysian curry! Woo hoo!
Jeremy, Nathan, Jannine, Susan and I stuffed ourselves silly with random bits of Chinese goodness. It made it like a game--"Gotta eat it all!” I think i spent about $9 total. Hot and sour soup, bao, curry, moon cake, rice, duck, mmmm...and so much more. It was great to see random people just standing in the middle of the street messily stuffing their faces with great food and not-so-great utensils.
What genius came up with this event? Whoever started it should also convince the city to have it more often. yay!
On another note, it seems that any Chinese event must manditorily have the Lions come out. Why is that? Don’t we do enough of that on Chinese New Year? Oh well, that’s just a baby rant unworthy of its own post…
Super size them please

Disclaimer: If you are offended by the word “breast,” please do not read any further. Thank you.
I ask this only because if this is the case, you are about to be seriously offended because that is the topic of this post. Not just breast, but removable breasts.
The big thing right now (heheh no pun intended) is for women to get breast enlargements. I personally have a lot of issues with body augmentations, but that will have to be in The Rants section of this site. For now, we will focus on my BRILLIANT idea to solve the issue of breast size. You see, having large breasts is not always a good thing. Often it causes back pains and other physical maladies such as difficulty in movement (such as running and other exercises). That is simply not comfortable or convenient. My solution is to have Adjustable Breasts™. That’s right. Wouldn’t it be great if you had sets of different sized breast to choose from so that you can find the appropriate size for the each occassion?
Let’s say you have a certain outfit that could really benefit from having a fuller figure. Just slap on the D cups for that day or for that outting. But you want to go work out first. Running is a breeze when you can put on your AA cups! Or maybe for that backless dress that you can’t wear a bra with, you can choose a nice B.
I believe that this is the future of body augmentation. I don’t think it’s a healthy idea, but i think it’s a brilliant idea. If people can convince you that putting bags of silicon in your body is a good idea, it’s a short leap to my idea adjustable breast. If only we could find some way to actually attach them...I don’t think velcro will work so well. I’m not worried--i’ll just leave that for the scientists to figure out. I’m sure there’s a way. I just want to remind you that you read it here first.
GENIUS!!
Ashes and Snow

I’m a sucker for photography--and this exhibit at Pier 54 really made me swoon!
It’s great to have a program that is flexible enough to take our education to the street! And by that, I mean that we get to travel the city to various locations to see things that are applicable to our program. My instructional television class went to see the exhibit “Ashes and Snow” by Gregory Colbert. Even the building it was housed in was fascinating! It was constructed by Shigeru Ban who made it out of shipping crates and a material that looks like mailing tubes. Despite its seemingly transitory appearance, the inside is deftly designed to simulate a sanctuary.
I’m including some images here. I think you’ll enjoy them! :D
The images were displayed at large scale on parchment paper (or at least something that was printed to look like parchment) and hung by strings so that it looked as if it were levitating. One travelled on a path of wood planks laid across a field of smooth, small, white stones. They were lit by a spotlight - making them cast shadows but angled in such a way so that the viewer’s shadow would not affect the image in any way. At the end of the path was a movie of the same situations depicted in the still photography. This part, however, seemed hokey and cliche. Kind of disappointing after having such a great experience with the prints. There were parts where he chants to the audience, “Feather to fire, fire to blood, blood to bone, bone to marrow, marrow to ashes, and ashes to snow...” He repeats it over and over again and finally whispers it (in his head, i’m sure he was thinking, “now this is DEEP"). AND there seems to be some controversy over the rumor that Colbert sedated the animals for filming.
All in all, despite the video, it was a wonderful experience.
And then we went out as a class for BBQ. AAaaaahh, collaborative learning...truly a wonder of modern education. :D
Don't leave home without it

For all of you Douglas Adams and his literary work, BEHOLD! His time on the big screen cometh!
You’ve got to check out the trailer for this movie, an adaptation of the infamous book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It has the guy from the British TV series, The Office (also in Love Actually). It looks like this could be an ok adaptation. It’s at least pretty, which is a good start.
And that guy...he does sort of have an Arthur Dent sort of quality about it. Hmmmmm, may be worth checking out!
