"Happy Birthday, Mr. President"
Monday, February 15, 2010
What better way to say, “Happy birthday, Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Washington,” or “I love you” than with a Seasonal Tree?
Yes, I actually went through with it. With the help of my fearless (but skeptical) roommate, the tree was decorated and festivities held. It was a great backdrop for our Super Bowl party! The only thing I would have liked more would have been a top hat instead of a star on top. OR we could have made it more ethnically diverse. After all, it IS Black History Month!
Anyway, here’s a pic for all those curious about the tree!
(And yes, this IS very hand made and crafty, and *not* in a good way!)

“Isn’t it a little late to be writing about your Christmas tree, Kat? I mean, it’s already January 12!”
Sure, it’s late, but this tree is special. This tree is more than an ordinary fake tree to me. No, it doesn’t have fiber optic colors or smell of real pine needles. It’s the fake tree that I grew up with. Yup. That means this tree has been through hell and high water. It survived through moves, children yanking on its faux branches, dogs try to piddle on its trunk, year after year of decorations ranging from the hideous to the sublime, and then being boxed up every year in a really big ‘ol TV box.
Isn’t it beeaaauutiful?
Now as it rounds the corner on its 35th or 36th Christmas, I am stuck with a dilemma: What the heck do I DO with this thing? I have no room to store it. It has been at my parents’ place for the last couple years, but they have been on a seek and destroy mission to clean up their place. I’m afraid if I send it back there, it may never come back. On the other hand, I don’t have any storage space that will even let the box through the door!
Today my friend Clint gave me a brilliant idea. Why not make it, instead of keeping it as just a Christmas tree, why not keep it up all year long and make it a HOLIDAY TREE? I could have it dressed for Valentine’s Day in no time! Red and pink hearts, some confetti, throw some chocolates on it and it’s voila! It’s done! Then comes St. Patty’s day in March, Easter in April, and maybe Cinco de Mayo for May. I think there’s a stretch between July and October that could be a little awkward, but who’s planning anyway?
The plus is that it could be a conversation piece for anyone who comes by to visit. Never worry about having an awkward starter conversation about the weather when you’re at my place! Not only can it spawn conversation, it can spawn events! We could have decoration-making parties and monthly “seasonal” dinners with a built in center piece!
Maybe I can start a trend. “Holiday Tree fad sweeps the nation. Michael’s craft store basks in auspicious windfall.” I think it’s a great idea.
Sooooo...who wants to come over and help me decorate for Valentine’s day?
Happy 1st Birthday, Josh!

A year ago today, Joshua Koutaro Khoo entered the world!
Seriously those little guys really DO grow up fast! I thought it was just something people got used to saying. “Oh they grow up so fast don’t they!” with tears in their eyes. I have to say congratulations to Kenny and Yasuyo for surviving a WHOLE YEAR of babydom. That appears to be no small feat. I think of that one solitary diaper i once changed, multiply that by 10,000+, add new and odd and more “adult” consistencies, and suddenly, I have no idea how they made it through. Well guys, this one’s for you!
Happy Birthday Josh! I hope and pray for your growth through this new year of life!
The first day he arrived...
...to now where he’s old enough to have a little personality!
Debt Be Gone!
Thursday, October 16, 2008
I *think* I finished paying off one of my student loans!
I put the “I *think*” in there because it all depends on my new surrogate bank not failing. So assuming that the financial world doesn’t completely collapse by Monday, I’ll have finished off one piece of major debt! And it was the private loan with a variable interest rate too! Though honestly, with the Fed cutting interest rates to nothing, I think my variable interest rate ended up being better than my fixed interest rate on my other loan.
Wow - I looked at what I just wrote and realize that a couple years ago, if I had read that, I would have had no idea who or what it was talking about. Truly, there’s nothing like economic crisis and the financial world going down the toilet to act as a quick tutorial on loans and savings! Woohoo! Truly, a silver lining to this ugly cloud! LOL
So now I have freed up some capital to put into....a mutual fund? My 401K? Buy stocks? Government bonds? Or how about some property? Oh shoot. I might as well just stick it under my mattress or maybe use it as toilet paper.
My New Theme Song: Little Superhero Girl
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
This song is by Corrinne May and I’ve adopted it as my theme song.
I’ve been following Corrinne May, a Singaporian-born singer/songwriter in LA, for about 4 years now. Reuben introduced me to her. But I was not a very consistent fan. About 2 months ago, I went to hear her play at a venue that was really close to me. I had no excuse not to go!
She had one song that I just really loved called, “Little Superhero Girl.”

I feel like a little girl
Trying to conquer the whole wide world
Everybody wants a piece of me
And I just don’t know where to turn
I’ve got work piled up to my head
All I want to do is jump into bed
And wash away my troubles
with lemonade
Play hide and seek
with the boy next door
Take a trip to Singapore and
Imagine how I’ll make the world
a better place
All I need is a good disguise
One where nobody can recognise
That I’m feeling so small
All I need is a secret weapon
I’ve gotta have faith
Zapping monsters into outer space
I’m gonna be a Superhero
Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-
Yeah
If I were a little girl
Trying to clean up the whole wide world
I’d kick the bad boys back to school
Teach them fighting’s just not cool
I’d give every kid a teddy bear
Turn starving people into millionaires
Break glass ceilings with dynamite
sprinkle a little sugar and spice
Turn the bullies that terrorize
Into pink poodles that bark,
but don’t bite
All I need is a good disguise
One where nobody can recognise
That I’m feeling so small
All I need is a secret weapon
I’ve gotta have faith
Zapping monsters into outer space
I’m gonna be a Superhero
Na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-na-na-
Yeah
Little Superhero Girl
Little Superhero Girl
Save me
Little Superhero Girl
Little Superhero Girl
Save me from myself
I feel like a little girl
Trying to conquer the whole wide world
