WeHo Halloween Carnaval: An Introduction to West Hollywood
Thursday, November 01, 2007
Having just moved into the neighborhood, I had a great opportunity to see what the community was like in this huge block party event!
Monica, Rommel and I ventured out into the streets to catch a glimpse of the crazy revelry of which I have heard many a tale. Getting there was the first adventure. We successfully rode public transit in LA! We got on a bus and made it to the Carnaval with no problem whatsoever! In fact, we had to document the momentous occasion. Ya gotta love the rainbow upholstery. Rommel took a bunch of pics that night - in fact, all the ones below are by him!
We got there a little early so we wandered the streets. But as the night wore on, the streets became packed with one amazing costume after another. Some were amazingly elaborate and made me wonder how much money they spent on their costumes. Or even more impressive, how much *time* it took to put them together.
This Robotech Valkyrie must have taken awhile to put together.
Snowy demon costumes were all the rage!
Shrek and Fiona look almost TOO real...
More impressive than the amazing costumes, though, were the amount of strange and hyper people all around. Halloween is that holiday where you can be your alter ego self, be a caricature of yourself with all your characteristics exaggerated, or just be plain bizarre. Or you could be cheap like me and just get a dress and wings. Oh and the heels. Those things killed by the end of the night! Some used their costumes to fully express themselves, like the guys who were wandering around in a thong and a mesh body suit. Or the guy who body painted himself and wore...nothing (except shoes of course. Gotta protect the feet!).
There were lots of other great costumes like…
Drag Queens...
Drag Queens...
And more Drag Queens!
I have to say, I feel like I know more about my neighborhood than ever now! Maybe more than I want to know--like knowing the guy that lives 2 houses down can probably strut better in heels than I ever will be able. It’s a great place with vibrant people. It’s gonna be fun!
so you live in west hollywood now? very cool.
last year i went to w.hollywood for halloween, and i was shocked and amazed, hehe. i mean, a huge amount of people and some really elaborate costumes. and then you have the wild and free peoples, of west hollywood. hehe. i mean, i always knew w.hollywood was very gay friendly. and i am no where near being a homophobic with gay friends and what not. i guess the shocking part was the care free attitude? hehe, like last year this guy adorned his body with stick on jewels. and thats all, and of course shoes.
but ya, good times. w,hollywood for sure is a great melting pot.
