And i thought Kriss Kross was strange

You remember the kids with the backwards pants, right?

I found some other kids that have invented an equally ridiculous style: wearing TWO pairs of pants at the same time!

I was at this Jr. High school, observing a student-run program. It was sweltering; the sweat beads were rolling down foreheads faster than Apollo Ono in a ice-skating sprint heat. There was no air conditioning, and we were on the fourth floor where all the heat from the rest of the building decided to hang out. You could actually see the heat waves as we passed open-doored classrooms. It was hot.

In the midst of this crazy muggy heat, I noticed several girls walking around with a pair of jeans AND work-style pants like Dickies. TWO PAIRS! Did they not get the memo that said, “It’s going to be hot today. Please wear only one pair of pants to prevent heat stroke?” I don’t even know where this style evolved from! I can see that it may have been useful in the winter, but COME ON! It’s HOT outside! Does that just mean that they are really really late adopters of fashion? Was this something that was in during Jan.-Feb.?

I don’t know. All i can say is that i’m about to jump out of my skin, it’s been so humid recently. Ah well. Maybe if i go put on two pairs of pants, the relief of taking them off when i get will make me think, “Wow, it’s really cool in here!” Mind over matter...crazy kids…

  1. I was waiting for a chance to tell you, and since you posted about students, I thought I’d make my comment here.

Remember, way, way back in the day when Jen Heald was at Hachioji (now defunct)?  Remember her director Pastor Suzuki?  Remember her daughter?  Better yet, remember their *youngest* daugther?

Take a look at the girl sitting next to me in this picture with her classmates in my first year class:

  3. yah, i’ve been noticing that at my school… except it’s with sweats over here.

i just thought that they were wearing their pe outfit w their school clothes… or that they wanted to sag the sweats and it would be a dress code violation, so they wear the jeans under it for decency.  i dunno… who knows what motivates these kids nowadays =)

  4. Has the “layered” stuff gravitated to the states?  You know, how girls here wear dresses on top of jeans, etc.  Or the multiple pairs of mile-long unwashed socks?

  5. I like that dress-over-jeans look!  Even Erisa-san goes out like that, heheheh

  6. The dress-over-jeans thing has indeed reached the states! I kind of like it, but am too bulky to wear a dress over pants--it would just balloon my hips out. (I’m sure this is a topic that all the men would just *love* to discuss...)

As for the 2pants thing, I found out that it’s becaue that school has a “no jeans” rule, but girls still want to wear jeans. To me, this is even MORE ridiculous than making a random fashion statement. Silly silly fashion.

  7. It’s uber hot and muggy down here as well.  Fortunately the women wear two layers of nothing.  Seriously.  So many girls have these gigantic jumblies which they don’t really seem to know what to do with.  So they just bounce around in their blouses full of boobs.

So maybe in some respects the kids’ NY fashion sense is a little more discrete if not comfortable.
