Baby Explosion

Tuesday, September 06, 2005

So it seems that in my absence from Cali, everyone has had babies.

In my short vacation home, i got a chance to visit a couple of my friends that i haven’t seen in a while. It’s at times like these that I remember that no matter what *I’m* going through or doing, life just keeps going for other people.

Me: “What?!? The world doesn’t revolve around me?”

The World:  “Booo on you. We have lives of our own!”

Me: “...oh. [sniff!]”

I got to see Nelson and Nercy and their baby Celeste. She’s very cute and such a quiet baby! (Quiet is the key part that makes her a cute baby ;) She looks a lot like Nelson. Aparently, Nelson is the only one who can make her smile. I got lucky and caught her in the act! But normally, she looks very concerned.

So then i visited Lilli and her baby Leila. I didn’t get a chance to see her husband, but Jenno and Alan joined us! I have not hung out with Lilli and Jenno together since undergrad. Or maybe it might have even been high school! No, not that long, but it’s definitely a testiment to how bad i am at keeping in touch. Anyway, Leila was being a good baby for most of the evening...and then, she started getting fidgety. Uh oh. That meant that mommy Lilli had to do stuff and needed to pass Leila off to me.

Let me state here that i have not held babies in the past. I have always been the youngest child and have never needed to take care of (a.k.a. “babysit") small children. Holding children makes me break out in a cold sweat. Baby noises sound menacing and fierce. Diapers are a thing of horror for me. Ok, so it’s not that bad, but i’m pretty inexperienced with the whole baby thing.

Luckily, Leila didn’t leap from my arms while i awkwardly held out at arms length in front of me. Lilli suggested, “You could bounce her a little.” Ah, bouncing. Bounce bounce bounce. Does this count as shaken baby syndrome? Bounce bounce some more. She didn’t look any happier. So then i told her, “I’ll give you back to your mom in a bit.” All smiles from her.

So the lesson learned is that passing the baby back to its mother is the best way to produce a smile. Oh, and the other lesson is that strollers are way to complicated for me to figure out. How *do* you fold that darn thing up?

  1. Nelson’s baby is so cute!  I’m so glad he reproduced in an aesthetically pleasing way.

You look great with the kid, Kat.  Kind of like what’s-his-name with the sloth.  I think you should have lots of them.  And watch lots of the Discovery Health channel prior to doing so.  (Dude, it would be the perfect marketing tool for the Rapex!)

So let’s take a poll:  Men - will you be inside the delivery room or out?

  2. Hmmm . . . guess you never got to see my baby or Lian and Dean’s.  Oh well, guess you have to visit Cali again.  (Are the only people who don’t call this place Cali the ones who actually live here?)
