Collecting Parents

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

In addition to my own excellent parents, I have discovered that I have a knack for collecting parents wherever I go.

I have my real mom and dad here in Cali. Hi! -(waves at mom and dad)- Then i have the Numatas in Yokohama, Japan. I have Angelo’s parents out in Maryland, Kirstin’s mom Anna Mae, Jon, Yvette, Gordon, Gary, Ken et al. from Japanese Church (even if they’re not old enough to be my parents). I’m lucky to have so much love in my life.

Well, i have a new addition to the family! At work, there is Jim. We used to be on the same team, teaching at the same hospital. But he got moved about, shifted, pulled here and there, and so I barely see him anymore. But in so many ways, he is like another dad to me. He’s always joking with me, calling me “kid,” giving me relationship advice and generally watching over me. He’s a military man, which makes it even more fun. He took to calling me “Khooter” during our tenure at Panorama City. The name, honestly, sounds pretty icky - just onomatopoeically, it sounds gross. BUT because it’s Jim’s name for me, I know that it’s a term of endearment and i will accept it graciously. (But i better not catch anyone else calling me that!)

So this post is dedicated to Jim, my new dad! I miss you and wish we could still work together!
