God Encounters Retreat

Monday, February 07, 2005

This past weekend, me and the Advent Hope crew escaped to the wilderness of Massachusetts to join a youth conference at camp Winnekaeg.

Jose Rojas was our speaker. He’s gotta be one of the most down-to-earth speakers i’ve heard. He was really inspiring. The workshops were good too. In fact, when our group arrived (at 2 in the morning!), we got the program and who do you think i saw on it? MARKY! I had completely forgotten that he had moved up there! Here’s a pic of him, just in case you forgot what he looks like:

He was doing a workshop about Christian sportsmanship. I was so proud because he used the pic that i had done for his farewell scrapbook!

We had a lot of fun as a group. I can say without a doubt that we were probably the most obnoxious yet fun-loving group there! Weeeeee! And probably the oldest yet most immature. Or maybe that was just my small group of friends...hmmmm. I was so happy - they had a sleigh ride (well, it was on wheels, but it was still horse drawn) AND a gym night! We got to play volleyball and basketball! Ack! I’m so sore still. Nathan and i brought up our guitars and we had an Advent Hope Sings afternoon, jamming in the snow in front of a frozen lake. I actually got to witness ice fishing in person! Who’da thunk that I’d be able to experience such things?

I think highlights include:

1. The special guest singer (who was very white) asking one of the black girls, because “our group seems more...diverse than expected,” whether the group might know gospel songs instead of praise songs (basically asking this girl to represent all black people at the conference and tell her what songs that “her people” might know). It seemed, well, tactless.

2. We at Advent Hope can really get into our board games! If you wanna play with us, you better bring it!

3. Singing in the brisk afternoon in beautiful scenery was a beautiful memory never to be forgotten!

4. I got to score on Nathan while shooting around. Woot! Hook shot baby!  ;) Call me Kareem Abdul JaKAT.

5. Our group piled onto a plastic table while watching volleyball and sort of destroyed it. What i mean is we warped it with our collective weight! (15 people?) It now looks like it’s smiling because it has a BIG DIP in the middle!

6. Jammie and Jenn G. tried to lock Alex and Nathan out of the lodge when they lost a doubles ping-pong match and had to walk 25 yards out into the frozen lake for punishment at 3 in the morning. It was almost like a cartoon seeing them run around in the cold night air. Awesome.

It was such a fun weekend! Thanks all of you guys who were there and made it memorable!
