Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu! (for those who can’t read the title) Happy New Year Everyone!

It’s the year of the PIG, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year. Something in my bones (can i say that now cuz i’m getting old?) tells me that there will be a lot of good things that happen this year. Plus pigs are cute - can they really bring bad things?

I’m in Japan right now. Yokkaichi, to be exact. It’s sort of, but not exactly, in the middle of nowhere. Literally, there’s nothing more than houses, convenience stores and refineries/smoke stacks here. It’s sister city is Long Beach, if that gives you an idea. Well, Long Beach minus Snoop Dogg. But i’m here in a school with 9 fun and happy Physical Therapists/Occupational Therapists who need to finish one last class for their degree. I’m Kathy “Tech Support” Khoo - reporting for duty, SIR!

I arrived here at 10:30 pm on Dec. 31. Instead of staying awake, i promptly passed out. I was soooo tired! So i actually missed new year’s. It’s sort of anithetical to last year’s new year in Times Square, New York, but that’s ok - it’s good to chill out every now and then. I just feel bad for the PTs and OTs. If you think New Year is big in the US, you should see in Japan. This is the biggest holiday of the year. And they’re spending it in class with moi. Don’t you feel bad for them? I know I do.

I’ll be leaving Yokkaichi to go to Tokyo to see Daryl and Yuko. I’m excited! W00t! I haven’t been back for so long! And i feel TOTALLY retarded in terms of speaking Japanese! Oh well, back to being that “slightly slow girl who is very lost all the time.”

Anyway, I hope you all are having a great new year! I’ll be putting up a photobook soon, so stay tuned for the link!

  1. Yes, there will be a lot of good things this year of the pig—but does it now put sanctions on eating bacon?  Hmm…

  2. Yokkaichi?  Where’s that?  Mie-ken?  You know Mutsumi is in Mie-ken somewhere?

Oh, and a close friend of mine protests every time I call it the year of the “pig”... it’s the BOAR, my friend insists.  “It’s a completely different animal!” I protest, “It’s like a cat and a bobcat!” (What does the Kat think?)

The Kansai Time Out magazine mentioned something about the challenge the year of the boar poses to illustrators & designers every year, because it’s such a tough animal to make cute, and in Japan, “cuteness is the bottom line.”

Anyway!  Looking forward to hearing about your adventures back in country!  Stop by Osaka next time.  smile
