"Just like in Pirates of the Carribean!"

Wednesday, July 06, 2005

To lighten up from the previous scary post, here’s something lighter and fat-free!

I saw REAL fireflies for the first time in my whole life! I know this must sound incredibly silly to many of you guys out there, but seriously, it was amazing! My only exposure to fireflies? Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Not exactly an authentic setting.

I decided last night to take a jog--something i have not done in a long, long time. Ooooh, and my body felt it. Anyway, it was just around sunset when i noticed these flickering lights at the edge of the path around the Jackie O. Reservoir. I couldn’t help be slow my pace to get a closer look (never mind the fact that the pain in my sides prevented me from going any faster anyway). And there they were, sort of hovering, turning their lights on and off, winking at me.

Up close, they are NOT cute creatures. But from a distance, the sight of their rising motion as their weave their way skyward from the grass makes me think of fairies and twilight magic, the kinds of things i used to love reading about when i was a kid. I seemed all so very magical and beautiful.

In the middle of the city, there is still beauty and peaceful nature.

  1. Fireflys?  Cool.  Just don’t stop by Riverside Park and look for Lumpy the Illegal Drug Deformed Squirel.  I hear he’s cute from afar, but ugly up close.

  2. First time caller, long time listener . . . .

Everyone remembers their first kiss, first crush, and their first firefly.

It was those darn fireflies that confirmed my decision to go to Andrews my freshman year.  I figured, “Wow, this place is so different!  They even have fireflies.”

Oh, the power of those fireflies!

  3. i love fireflies! Have you seen that videocam (sony?)commercial where the dad took his kids to a field where they spent the evening catching fireflies? And when they got home, the dad crossed off his list of things to do with his kids, catching fireflies...awww...they are magical creatures that brings out the kid in us.

  4. I miss fireflies.  We used to catch them and lightly squeeze their butts to make the light go on.  But don’t squeeze too hard or you’ll kill them, and if the light happens to be on then, the goo will glow for a bit.

But yeah, fireflies are just beautiful & magical at night.  Somehow exciting and soothing at the same time.  I miss that.

Glad you’re okay, Kat, from the DV experience.
