MMO does not mean Mama's Marzipan Omelette or Mamoun's Mulleted Outfitters

MMO is the shortened term for MMORPG which is short for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game - a term that i have never imagined would stand for anything concrete in my universe, but i suppose it’s time for a change of heart…
Despite trepidation, i’m thinking of playing World of Warcraft when it comes out. I’m afraid. I’m not a gamer. I don’t play games. But...this one seems very social. But i’m so inexperienced! I’m reading the incredibly detailed history that takes place in this game right now. It’s reeeeaaaaally long. i’m on paragraph 4. So i’m a slow reader! Gimme a break!
Anyway, I’m just letting the world know that i’m giving this deal a whirl. What does this mean for our hero(ine)? Will the mark the beginning of a glorious new era or a dark spiral into the sordid depths of the world of mmo addiction?
...
i’m scared. hold me!
Do we owe this pleasure to the corruptive qualities of ol’ Slim?
Posted by laura on 10/21 at 01:21 PMwell, i’ve always said that mmos in their most basic form are giant chatrooms but you can do stuff in them. take the addictive qualities of a chatroom and addictive qualities of a game and you get something that people don’t mind paying monthly for.
btw, if you’re looking for story i don’t think i’ve seen any mmo come close to the in-game cutscenes of ffxi. also there’s nothing in WoW that’s cuter then a taru. >< i may give WoW a shot when it comes out (played the beta and wasn’t too impressed).
Posted by level96 on 10/21 at 04:26 PMheh, another WoW person. ok, here goes. I have friends who rplay wow a lot. they love it. i’ve played it for about a month before the big beta release. (given an account by a friend, anyways)
when choosing an mmo you will either play because of the story and follow that (that you favor the genre), play because you have friends who play and enjoy spending time with them even if it is digitally.
at the basic level all MMO’s are the same. they all offer mission/quest’s/objectives like “hey i need you to go point B and kills stuff because i’m to much of a lazy bastard to do it myself and i’ll give you a bag of random stuff for your troubles”
all the other stuff in window dressing and flavor. it’s like, do you like strawberry ice cream? or chocolate? or maybe mint chip with a scoop of pastachio. it’s all icecream.
odds are i’ll buy WoW and play if people i know are playing. i just hope they all are on the same server.
oh ya, and how much spare time do you have in order to invest into a MMO. because people who have lives really don’t have time for MMO’s.
lately i’ve been playing City of Heroes, EverQuest 2 (i’m in the beta for Everquest 2, i’ve been in since the beta launched). I’ve played others but my attention span doesn’t help when i’m trying to play the game by myself (soloing). but i digress.
if you do pick up wow, and rumor has it that they’re gold mastering end of this month. (at least that’s the rumor.) let’s coordinate servers. that way we can all go around causing havok, or at least doing random things.

Posted by on 10/21 at 11:37 PMI’ve never done too well with MMOs. I’m too ADD and anti-online-social to get into them, I get bored really quickly. I did play everquest briefly. I typed out my amusing experience with EQ on my blog. It’s quite possible the longest entry I’ll ever write.
Posted by Jimbo on 10/22 at 06:21 AMon a secondary note, i don’t think being addicted to an MMO is really that bad. Seeing as there are worse things to me addicted to. like crack, heroin, sex… wait, no not that last one. well maybe, it depends. but $12-$15/month is definatly cheaper then most other addictions if you think about it. yes, even sex.
Posted by Ryan Moore on 10/22 at 03:00 PMWow Ryan. Someone is hard up.
DON’T START KATHY!! NEVER START!
This message brought to you by those few that broke away from their Evercrack addiction.thanks.
Posted by on 10/26 at 02:15 PMshe’s talking about WoW, not everquest, completely different.
Posted by on 10/26 at 10:30 PMUm, YOU just pulled all of MMOG into one category and now your saying there different.

Posted by on 10/27 at 08:40 AMyou are using a term i don’t like, ‘evercrack’; i prefered the term ‘neverquest’. so i decided to post about it. that is all. haha.
Posted by on 10/27 at 09:57 AMWoW? I liked the first three WoW albums… Blue, Orange and Green. The Green album was where I first heard “Breathe”. (^_^) After that, though, in the new Yellow and Red albums, they began recycling songs and just doing covers… more studio than live worship. I love the end of “Agnus Dei” on the Green album when you can hear people crying out to God freely. (^_^) Keeheeheehee…
