People on the subway are crazy

Tuesday, December 13, 2005

They’re crazy and they don’t always look like they are.

Last night, i was coming home on the A train. This blond businessman sort of guy in a long charcoal gray wool trench coat sat down next to me. He was well dressed, wearing a pinstripe suit, the aforementioned wool coat, cap-toe shoes, and a very warm soft red scarf. Unusually, i did not have my iPod pumping music into my head, so i could not shut out the world and had time to observe everything around me.

All seemed well until he began sniffling and rubby his eyes with his scarf. I watched him carefully in the reflection of the window. Did he feel bad? Was something wrong? At this point, i was merely concerned for the guy. Maybe it was a hard day at work? Who knows? So i continued to watch. He began to look up, as if he were trying to restraint the tears from falling. Interesting. Interesting.

That subsided for a bit, and I almost forgot about him altogether until heard this light snickering coming from the blond guy. It was under his breath, but he seemed very amused with something, as if he were listening to standup comedy that noone else could hear. His snickering was just quiet enough that no one but me could hear, but his face made it pretty obvious that he thought something was funny but that he shouldn’t let anyone else in on the joke. Basically he looked crazy.

Then he did the eye-wipey thing and looked like he was about to cry. The entire time, he kept shifting about uncomfortably, bumping my elbows and just generally sending out “I’m miserable” vibes.

Totally didn’t expect crazy. And maybe there’s still a way to explain it. It wasn’t *that* weird.

After all, he was *much* better than the homeless guy on the train several nights before with the the inches of snot dripping from his nose and onto his beard. Ew.

  1. My mother has this odd idea that she’s going to take Gabi to Yosemite sometime between Christmas and New Years. Other than that, I’m hanging around Laguna for all of break. I’d love to see you!
