Rapex--good idea/bad idea?

Thursday, September 08, 2005

Sonette Ehlers is definitely thinking about feminine protection in a different way.

She invented the Rapex--an anti-rape device that is like a female condom but has tons of little hooks and snags that embed themselves in the attacker’s offending appendage. Thanks to Kirstin and Dani for directing me to this interesting news break. The title of the email was “A Penis Flytrap.” I thought that was pretty witty.

You can read about the Rapex on MSNBC’s site. The thing about the device is that the hooks can only be removed surgically, so any rapist who gets it attached to them either has to suffer with it forever or go to the hospital to get it removed and essentially turn himself in.

The other side is that this may escalate violence. In fact, i would say it’s guaranteed that to really enrage some attackers. What then? Some attackers can still inflict damage even when they themselves are hurt (i.e. victim kicks attacker in the groin but doesn’t cripple him as planned). I’m really curious what will happen with this. It’s primarily developed for South Africa where sexual assault rates are the highest in the world. I suppose at that point, you have nothing to lose. The other things is that the Rapex hasn’t been tested on real humans yet. I wonder if they’ll work as anticipated.

Keep your eyes peeled for more news of the Rapex!

  1. Herpes, AIDS and other VD’s take a back seat now.  If people want to say there’s no such thing as safe sex anymore, all they have to do is bring up Rapex.  That’s enough to scare ANY guy.
