This is perhaps one of the most brilliant ideas: $1 a plate taste-testing in Chinatown!
Thanks to Laura (who had to clue me in from all the way in Nebraska!), I was clued in to this wonderful event that took place on Mott just below Canal St. They blocked off the roads and made it a pedestrian’s paradise! Chinese restaurants had their food out and on display, selling for only $1/plate! Some were, well, stingy and only had a tiny portion for that dollar. BUT some were very generous with their portions. Singapore Cafe had some great Malaysian curry! Woo hoo!
Jeremy, Nathan, Jannine, Susan and I stuffed ourselves silly with random bits of Chinese goodness. It made it like a game--"Gotta eat it all!” I think i spent about $9 total. Hot and sour soup, bao, curry, moon cake, rice, duck, mmmm...and so much more. It was great to see random people just standing in the middle of the street messily stuffing their faces with great food and not-so-great utensils.
What genius came up with this event? Whoever started it should also convince the city to have it more often. yay!
On another note, it seems that any Chinese event must manditorily have the Lions come out. Why is that? Don’t we do enough of that on Chinese New Year? Oh well, that’s just a baby rant unworthy of its own post…
